Concert Facts:
Ma Mere l'Oye was originally composed by Ravel as a piano duet in 1910. It wasn't until a year later, in 1911, that he orchestrated the work; later that same year he expanded the work into a ballet.
Coleridge-Taylor arranged his Noveletten for piano and violin, but the orchestral version must have been a favorite of the composer: even though his publisher Novello lost money printing the piece, Coleridge-Taylor programmed the set repeatedly on concerts he conducted throughout his career.
Mozart didn't nickname Symphony No. 41 as "Jupiter." It was actually given the nickname after his death by Johann Peter Salomon, a jack of all musical trades who is famed in music history for bringing Franz Joseph Haydn to London.
