Join PCO and the Nittany Ballet as we tell stories through sound and movement. Enjoy the lush sounds of Coleridge-Taylor’s Novelette No. 1 and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, contrasted with the crisp, rhythmic Danses Concertantes by Stravinsky. Don’t miss this dynamic journey through romantic lyricism and modern energy!
Concert Facts:
Coleridge-Taylor's Four Novelettes features string orchestra with tambourine and triangle. Composed in 1901–1902, the work infuses romantic sentimentality with a modern string orchestra.
Stravinsky's Danses Concertantes was composed in 1941 as a commission from the Werner Janssen Symphony. It wasn't until 1944 that the work was choreographed by George Balanchine and performed as a ballet.
Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings offers a nineteenth-century complement to the previously heard Novelette. This four-movement work combines an homage to Mozart, a Viennese waltz, and folk influences within a larger, four-movement classical structure.
